V. plicatum f. plicatum – Japanese Snowball Bush – This spreading, bushy, deciduous shrub grows 10’ feet tall and 12’ feet wide. It produces heart shaped, toothed, deeply veined, dark green leaves, to 4” long, turning red-purple in autumn. In late spring, bears saucer shaped, sterile white flowers, 1 ¼” across, in dense, spherical, terminal cymes, 3” across. Does not produce fruit.
Grow in any moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade, most are drought tender. Where not hardy, shelter from cold drying winds. Most deciduous Viburnums tolerate hard pruning.
