Trochodendron – Wheel Tree – There is a sole species of a flowering evergreen, small tree or large shrub in this genus. It naturally occurs in forest in South Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. T. aralioides is grown for its handsome growth habit, its spirally arranged leathery, dark green, long stemmed, 2-6″ long, lance shaped leaves and its racemes of 10-20, unusually, vivid bright green flowers with 40-70 stamens. Grow in a woodland garden among other trees and shrubs, or as a specimen. Grow in moist but well drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil in full sun or dappled shade. Shelter from cold, drying winds. T. aralioides – This slow growing , broadly columnar tree or large, rounded shrub from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan grows to 30′ feet tall and 25′ feet wide. It produces broadly ovate to elliptic, tapered, glossy, dark green leaves, to 5″ long. Racemes, to 5″ long, of 10-20 or more flowers are borne at the shoot tips in late spring and early summer, the petalless, bright green flowers, 3/4″ across, each consist of numerous stamens radiating from a central green disk.
