T. vulgaris – Common Thyme – Garden Thyme – This is the most popular culinary thymes, it forms a bushy, cushion of about 6-12″ tall and 16″ wide, and it comes from Western Mediterranean to the South Italy. It produces tiny linear to elliptic, finely hairy , strong aromatic, mid green leaves, up to ½” long. In late spring and early summer, it bears pale purple to white flowers in whorled racemes.

‘Aureus’ – has leaves suffused with yellow

‘Orange Balsam’ – has orange scented foliage

‘Silver Posie’ – has white edged leaves.

Grow in well drained neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. For thick, dense plants, the flowers should be removed after flowering. Divide in spring.

Prone to gray mold (botrytis) root rot, and the larvae of some Lepidoptera insects
