Asclepias incarnata – Swamp Milkweed – This thick-stemmed perennial from Northeastern to Southeastern U.S.A. grows to 4’ feet tall and spreads to 2’ feet wide. It produces opposite narrowly elliptic to ovate mid green leaves 3-6” long. In mid summer it bears clusters of umbel-like cymes 2” wide of pinkish purple flowers with paler “horns” held on the upper leaf axils. Erect fruit follows flowers that are to 3” long.
Cold hardiness varies greatly between species. These easily grown plants that need fertile, well-drained, loamy soil in full sun. Divide in spring.
