There are about 80, deciduous or semi evergreen shrubs, in the rose family, in this genus. They are found naturally occurring in rocky places, thickets, woodlands, and woodland margins, and river banks, in Northern Temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. They produce alternate leaves which are smooth edged or toothed, or lobed, and are decorative in some species. Spireas are grown mainly for their terminal, umbel like racemes, panicles, cymes, or corymbs of small, mostly saucer, cup or bowl shaped, white, yellow, pink or purple flowers, these are up to ½” across, sometimes larger, and are profusely borne in spring or summer. Grow in a mixed or shrub border. Compact spireas are ideal for a rock garden, use low growing variants of S. japonica as a groundcover, use taller spireas as informal hedging.
Grow in fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun. Some grow poorly on chalk. Prune those that flower on current years growth in spring, and those that flowers on previous year growth, which should have old flowering shoots removed just after flowering.
