Description
P. x yedoensis – Potomac Cherry – Yoshino Cherry – Tokyo Cherry – This quick growing, spreading, deciduous tree is a natural cross between P. speciosa and P. x subhirtlla grows 30-50′ feet tall and 30′ feet wide. From arching branches it carries elliptic, serrated, dark green leaves, to 4 ½” long, which develop vivid orange and red autumn colors. In early spring before the leaves it bears a profusion of fragrant, racemes of 5 or 6 bowl shaped, pale pink, 1 ½” across, fading to nearly white. Flowers are followed by insignificant fruit. Main flowering Cherry planted in Washington D.C.
Grow in any moist but well drained, moderately fertile, humus enriched soil, deciduous species and cultivars in full sun. Trim after flowering. Protect from strong wind. Feed with high nitrogen fertilizer. Few are drought tolerant.
