Description

Petrorhagia – There are about 30 species of annual and perennials in the Caryophyllaceae family, in this genus. They occur in rocky and sandy habitats in Southern and Central Europe. They produce wiry stems, swollen at the nodes, and bear linear to lance shaped or oblong, sometimes keeled leaves. They are grown for their terminal panicles or cymes of 5 petaled, salverform, (similar to baby breath but smaller) white sometimes pink or yellow flowers, borne in summer. Grow in a sunny position on a bank, in a rock garden, or against a wall. Grow in any poor to moderately fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Prone to snails and slugs. P. saxifraga – Tunica saxifraga – Tunis Flower – This mat forming perennial from Central and Southern Europe grows 4″ tall and 8″ wide. It produces linear, pointed, grass like, rich green leaves, ½” long. Over long periods in summer it bears delicate cymes of small, salverform, white or pink flowers, ½” across, with darker veining.
