S. nemorosa – S. virgata var. nemorosa – This neat, erect , clump forming, many branched perennial found form Europe to Central Asia grows 3′ feet tall and 18″-2′ feet tall. It produces, elliptical , notched, wrinkled, mid green leaves, to 4″ long. From summer to autumn, it bears many spikes of violet to purple, or white to pink flowers, to 1 1/2″ long, with violet to purple bracts,, in dense terminal racemes.

Grow in light, moderately fertile, humus rich, moist but well drained soil in full sun to light, dappled shade. Species with densely hairy or woolly leaves need sharp drainage and full sun. Protect from excessive winter moisture. Divide perennials in spring
