Description

Parrotiopsis – There is a sole species of a deciduous shrub that makes up this genus. It occurs in forest in the Western Himalayas. It is grown for its showy 2″ diameter flower heads of petalless flowers each with densely packed 20 or more yellow stamens surrounded by large petal like bracts. From hairy young shoots it carries toothed, ovate to rounded leaves, to 3″ long and held alternately. Grow as a specimen plant. Grow in deep, fertile, preferably acidic, moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. P. jacquemontiana – This upright shrub or sometimes a small tree, from the western Himalayas grows 20′ feet tall and 12′ feet wide. It produces ovate, slightly toothed, mid green leaves, to 4″ long, which turn shades of yellow in autumn. From mid spring to early summer it bears spider like flower heads, to 2″ across, consisting of yellow anthers surrounded by white bracts. Zones 6-9
