F. ulmaria – Spiraea ulmaris – Meadowsweet – Queen of the Meadow – This clump forming perennial from Europe and Western Asia grows 2-6′ feet tall and 2-3′ feet wide. It produces irregularly pinnate, strongly veined, inversely lance shaped strongly veined, inversely lance shaped leaves, white downy beneath. The terminal leaflets are 2-4″ across. In summer, branching stems bear dense corymbs, to 10″ across, of creamy white flowers.
‘Aurea’ – has warm yellow, then creamy yellow leaves in spring, later becoming pale green
Grow all but F. vulgaris in moderately fertile, leafy,. Moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. F. rubra and F. ulmaria will also thrive in swampy, boggy conditions. Gold leaved forms color best in partial shade. Grow F. vulgaris in dries, alkaline soil in full sun. Mulch in spring. Divide in autumn or spring.
