O. majorana – O. hortensis – Majorana hortensis – Sweet Marjoram – Knotted marjoram – This upright evergreen subshrub, often grown as an annual or biennial from Southwestern Europe and Turkey grows 24-32″ tall and 18″ wide. From branching stems it carries ovate or elliptic, softly hairy, highly scented, gray-green leaves, to 1 1/4″ long. From early to late summer it bears panicles of tubular, white or pink flowers, 3/8″ long, with gray-green bracts, to 1/8″ long.
Grow in full sun in poor to moderately fertile, well drained, preferably alkaline soil. Grow dwarf perennials and subshrubs in free draining soil. Some resent winter moisture. Divide perennials in spring.
Prone to root rots, stem rots, aphids, and spider mites.
