Globularia – Globe Daisy – There are about 22 species of mat or hummock forming, mainly evergreen perennials or subshrubs, in this genus. They mainly occur in open, rocky habitats around the Mediterranean, often at high attitude but also in Western Asia and Europe. They produce leathery, simple, smooth or toothed edged leaves and tiny, 2 lipped flowers held in dense, spherical heads. Globe Daisy are suitable for a rock garden, trough, or alpine house, the more robust species are also suitable in wall plantings. Grow in neutral to alkaline, sharply drained soil in full sun. Protect from winter moisture. Divide in spring. Prone to slugs and snails. G. meridionalis – G. bellidifolia – G. cordifolia subsp. bellidifolia – G. cordifolia subsp. meridionalis – G. pygmaea – This woody evergreen, dome shaped, mat forming subshrub from the mountain of Southern Europe grows 4″ tall and 12″ wide. It produces lance shaped to inversely lance shaped, glossy, dark green leaves, 3/4-3 ½” long. In summer it bears lavender-purple flowers in spherical heads to 3/4″ across, just above the foliage.
