Description

Gagea – There are about 50 species of small bulbous perennials, in this genus. They occur in Europe, Northern Africa and Western and Central Asia. They are grown for their star shaped to cup or funnel shaped, yellow or white flowers, held in umbels or racemes, with prominent leaf-like bracts, from spring to early summer. The leaves are basal, long and linear or linear-lance shaped. Some species produce bulbils in the axils of basal leaves and in the inflorescences. Most are suitable for a rock garden, in wet climates. Plant bulbs 1 ½” deep, in well drained, humus rich soil in full sun. G. peduncularis – This bulbous perennial from the Balkans and Northern Africa grows 2-6″ tall. It produces narrow, linear leaves, 2 ½-12″ long, taller than the flower stems. In spring it bears loose racemes of up to 7 funnel shaped yellow flowers, ½-1 1/4″ across, central green stripes on the outsides. Zones 6-9
