Description

Bruckenthalia – There is a single species of a small evergreen shrub, in this genus. It occurs on acidic soil in woodland and subalpine pastures in Southeastern Europe. It has needle like foliage, and bears terminal racemes of bell shaped flowers from late spring to summer. Grown for its neat habit and attractive flowers. Grow in moist but well drained, peaty, acidic soil in full sun. B. spiculifolia – Spike Heath – This compact, evergreen shrub from the Balkans grows 6″ tall and 8″ wide. It produces whorls of linear, glossy, dark green leaves, to 1/4″ long, which are borne on stiff, sparsely branched, upright stems. From late spring to summer it bears dense terminal racemes, to 1 1/4″ long of bell shaped, pale to deep pink, occasionally white flowers, to 1 1/4″ long. Zones 6-8
