Description

Bellium – There are about 4 species of miniature, mounding, spreading or trailing annuals and perennials, in this genus. They occur in seaside outcropping or moist, sandy regions of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. They produces alternate or whorled, very small spatula shaped, mid green basal leaves. They are grown for their tiny white flowers with yellow centers, borne in profusion. Grow in fertile sharply drained but moist soil in full sun with some midday shade. Divide in spring. B. minutum – This tiny, trailing annual from the Eastern Mediterranean Islands grows 3″ tall with an indefinite spread. It produces sparsely hairy scapes that carry thread like elliptic-obovate leaves, to 3/8″ long. Atop of 2″ stems it bears white flowers to ½” across, with purplish undersides, in summer. Zones 6-9
