Description

Azorella –

There are around 70 species of evergreen mat or cushion forming perennials or long lived sub shrub, in this genus.  They occur from rocky areas in New Zealand and with the majority species found in South America.  It produces aromatic foliage consisting of rosettes of toothed or lobed leathery leaves to ½” long.  In late spring or summer it bears umbels scattered over the surface of small flowers.  Great plant to use in a raised bed or scree bed or in alpine house, or in rock garden. When grown indoors grow in gritty soil based potting mix in alpine house in full light. When grown outdoors grow in open gritty, poor to moderately fertile, sharply drained soil in full sun. Prone to aphids and spider mites. Azorella trifurcata – Azorella nivalis – This dense compact, cushion forming perennial from Chile, and Argentina grows to 4” or more tall and spreads to 8” wide.  It produces rosettes of overlapping 3-5 triangular, deeply cut lobed, glossy dark green leaves to ½” long.  In summer it bears umbels of tiny creamy white flowers. Zones 6-8
