Ajania
There are about 30 species from East and Central Asia of low growing mound forming perennial in this genus. They bear usually opposite lobed leaves, cut to midrib, usually whitish-woolly hairs on beneath. In summer and autumn small button like flowers appear in flattish panicles at the tips of the branches. It very extensively branching underground creeping roots sending up numerous tough wiry stems. Great for rock gardens.
They’re very hardy and easily grown thriving in both poor and fertile soils with good draining, in full sun. After flowering prune back hard including creeping roots to restrict spreading if unchecked it can crowd out other plants.
Ajania pacifica – Chrysanthemum pacificum – Dendranthema pacificum – This low growing mound forming perennials or sub shrubs grows a feet tall and 3’ foot wide. The evergreen foliage is lobed, oval to egg shape with silky white silver edged, mid green leaves to 2” long with dense white hairs on the undersides. In autumn small flower heads, ¾” across are borne in branched groups to form a grouping 4” across. They need a long growing season to flower other wise grow for their foliage.
