Root-Knot Nematodes
Root-knot nematodes
Common name
Root-knot nematodes
Eel worms
Causal agent
Root-knot nematodes are parasitic nematodes belonging to the genus Meloidogyne. The nematodes affect the roots by forming knots or galls, decreasing nutrients and water absorption.
Scientific name
Meloidogyne spp.
Symptoms & Signs
The larva of the nematode feeds on the plant roots, which causes the formation of large galls or knots on the roots. This decreases the absorption of nutrients and water, as well as the yield and quality of the crops. The plants display stunted growth, wilt, and die early. Additionally, the leaves may also show symptoms of chlorosis.
