Rhododendron Bud Blast
Rhododendron bud blast
Common name
Rhododendron bud blast
Causal agent
Rhododendron bud blast is a fungal disease caused by the Rhododendron leafhopper. The insect spreads the Seifertia azalea fungus by laying eggs on the buds, resulting in failure to bloom.
Scientific name
Graphocephala fennahi
Symptoms & Signs
The female leafhopper lays eggs on the inside of the bus by making a small incision. As a result, the fungus enters the plant through the incision wound. The buds turn silver or brown and form black bristles. It does not bloom and falls off prematurely.
Transmission
Rhododendron bud blast spreads by means of spores since it is a fungal disease. The black bristles that appear on the buds are fruiting bodies containing spores. The spores can travel to other healthy plants by means of wind, water, insects, or infected tools.

Late spring to autumn
