Among these, potato leaf roll virus, potato virus X, and potato virus Y are the most important. They are usually caused by means of aphids and contact with infected crops. Symptoms & Signs The symptoms vary, depending on the virus. Potato leaf roll virus initially turns the leaves pale and gives them a rolled appearance. It causes stunted growth of the plant, as well as chlorosis on leaves. The leaves may also turn leathery. Alternatively, potato viruses X and Y result in mosaic patterns or necrotic lesions on the plant. These viruses can interact with each other, producing a synergistic effect and amplifying the infection. Transmission The virus spreads through aphids that feed on the plant’s foliage.
