Phytotoxicity Common name Phytotoxicity Causal agent Phytotoxicity is caused by excessive exposure to chemical substances such as fertilizers, herbicides, and heavy metals in the soil. Symptoms & Signs It inhibits the basic growth processes of the plant by hindering the metabolism leading to growth inhibition and death. The interference in photosynthesis, food and water uptake causes stunted growth, deformed fruits and flowers, chlorotic or necrotic spots on the plants, and poor germination.  These symptoms are usually seen on the young plant and leaves and gradually move to the mature leaves.
