Pear Stony Pit Virus
Pear stony pit virus
Common name
Pear stony pit virus
Dimpling
Causal agent
It is a viral disease that is mainly transmitted through pearwood.
Symptoms & Signs
The symptoms start appearing 3 weeks after petal fall, including dimpling and pitting. Dark green areas appear on the fruit, restricting the growth and deforming the fruit. This makes the fruit look unappealing. If the fruit is excessively pitted, it may be hard to cut into it. There are visible cracks on the bark, chlorotic or mottled leaves, and stunted growth.
Transmission
Pear stony pit virus cannot be transmitted from seeds or carriers like insects and animals. It is only spread through vegetative propagation by means of infected cuttings.
