Should I aerate my lawn?
Aerating is done to loosen/soften the ground, allowing grass roots, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper. It also allows new grass seed to be accepted into the soil more easily. Water that remains on the surface is heated by the sun and drys quickly. The Aeration process allows the water to stay cool and allows air to circulate into the soil. The lower water and nutrients attract deeper, stronger roots that are more resilient to pests and disease. If you want to have a strong, healthy lawn, you absolutely must aerate.
How often should I aerate my lawn?
If you have a low-traffic lawn or very sandy soil, and your yard appears healthy, you should consider aerating once every two or three years. If you have high traffic areas on your turf, or your soil contains lots of clay and compactable earth, you will need to aerate each year.
