What is a Euonymus Plant?
Euonymus plants are a tough shrub family that comes in various forms, sizes, and colours. Euonymus is blooming plants, although their flowers are usually unnoticeable. A variety knows them of names, such as spindle tree and winter creeper. These low-maintenance shrubs tolerate dryness and salinity and are simple to cultivate. It is said to be cold hardy from zone 7 to zone 9. This provides you with a good variety of euonymus species to pick from, whether seeking border plants, screens, ground cover, hedges or specimen plants.
How to Plant Euonymus?
Water your potted euonymus well before planting to keep the root ball as wet as possible—this aids in the prevention of shock. Make a hole double the size of the root ball. When you put the plant in the hole, make sure the top of the root system is slightly visible above the dirt line. Gently re-tamp the dirt around the root ball in the hole. Water deeply after planting until the earth can no longer retain water. Make a mound of 1 to 2 inches of compost around your new plant to help the soil absorbs water longer and minimize watering requirements.
How to Care for Euonymus?
Euonymus is simple to cultivate and maintain. The majority require full to partial light, although the burning bush may take greater shadow. These hardy bushes may grow in any soil that drainage well. Euonymus plants are drought resistant once established. Watering is usually only required during times of acute drought or for freshly planted plants until they develop. These bushes do not need to be pruned, although they do handle it well. When planting and in the spring, a balance delayed-release fertilizer can be used. If your soil is deficient, fertilize in the fall as well.
Some varieties of euonymus:
American euonymus (Euonymus americanus):
Euonymus americanus is a genus of flowering plants in the Celastraceae family. Strawberry shrub, American strawberry bush, bursting-heart, hearts-a-bustin, and hearts-bustin’-with-love are all common names. This is a suckering, open, deciduous shrub of the forest understory that grows approximately six to eight feet tall. It has an open, erratic behaviour pattern. The green blooms are quite unnoticeable. Its most attractive characteristic is pink-red fruits that open to reveal orange-red seeds. It thrives in damp, shaded conditions. It is grown to a lesser degree in local plant gardens. It is said to be cold hardy from zone 6 to zone 9. These plants may be purchased through native plant nurseries and catalogues. Plants can be reproduced by seedlings or by digging a sucker.
Golden Euonymus (Aureo-marginatus’):
The Golden Euonymus shrub is a small, evergreen with variegated green and gold leaves. This tiny compact hedge is an excellent year-round plant. It can withstand any amount of shade or sun, as well as varied soil types and cold exposure. The Golden Euonymus shrub has much more to offer than just versatility. Golden euonymous bushes can reach heights of 10 feet (3 metres) and widths of 6 feet (2 metres). A single one may create an eye-catching statement in your landscape. It may be planted almost anyplace and is drought-tolerant, resilient, and needs little to no maintenance.
Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus):
The Burning Bush is well-known for having the most vibrant and eye-catching RED colour of any plant. I understand what you’re thinking. It must take a lot of effort to keep a plant this beautiful alive. This beautiful shrub is simple to cultivate and requires very little upkeep. In spring and summer, the thick foliage of the Burning Bush is a brilliant shade of green. The real show starts in late summer when this hardy shrub develops its distinctive flaming red foliage. This vibrant hue lasts until the leaves fall in late autumn or early winter. The juvenile Burning Bush has an erect and vase-shaped habit. The natural habit of the Burning Bush grows into a rounded shape with horizontal, layered branching. This resilient shrub thrives in conditions ranging from full shade to full sun. Just keep in mind that the fall foliage will be slightly subdued in the shadow, and development will be slower. Once planted, your flaming bush will be drought tolerant. Fertilize at least one time a year in the spring using a high-quality, slow-release fertilizer such as the one we sell.
Euonymus japonicus (‘Jean Hugues):
Euonymus japonicus is a flowering plant of the Celastraceae family endemic to Japan, Korea, and China. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows to 2–8 m tall and has opposite, oval leaflets that are 3–7 cm long and have finely serrated margins. ‘Jean Hugues’ Euonymus japonicus is a thick, compact shrub with beautiful evergreen leaves. It is well-suited to garden borders and hedging, and it is expected to become the new favourite option for Box hedge. Whereas Buxus is vulnerable to box blight, Euonymus Jean Hugues is not, even though we have never had a client complain about box blight after purchasing from us! It’s ideal for parterres and formal hedges since the foliage stays dark green all winter.
Euonymus Goldy Hedging (winter creeper):
Euonymus Goldy is a new European variety that is pure bright gold. At the same time, there is no green in the leaf of other verities. Growth is bushy and dense, and this evergreen looks great all year round. This would be a show-stopping low hedge of 30-50cm high (by planting 3-5 plants per metre) that could contrast with the colours of other Euonymus varieties. Euonymus Goldy is very easy to plant and grow, and they succeed in any normal soil that doesn’t get waterlogged in wet spells and may be grown in the sun or shade, although the best foliage colour will come out with some sun.
