Grape phylloxera
Common name
Grape phylloxera
Causal agent
It is an aphid-like insect belonging to the genus phylloxera, which feeds on grape roots, especially the Vitis vinifera grape resulting in stunted growth.
Symptoms & Signs
These are microscopic, aphid-like insects that range in color from yellow to brown and orange. The initial symptoms of infestation include swelling on the rootless, which turns them yellow, and develops necrotic patches on the roots. This inhibits water and nutrient transport, resulting in stunted growth. It can form galls on the roots and leaves, causing chlorosis of the leaves.
