Life history and habits:
Eriococcus quercus, or oak eriococcin scales, are among the first scale insects to lay eggs and hence crawl in Raleigh. In early spring, the females get felted and swell. They are now brimming with eggs. Horticultural oil treatments would be most beneficial when the crawlers emerge from the eggs. Other pest management methods are not well understood.
