Description

Bolax – There are 3 species of dense cushion forming, evergreen perennials, in this genus. They occur in open, rocky areas of the Andean Mountains and the Falkland Islands. They have tight rosettes of tiny, alternate, fleshy, simple, very deeply 3 lobed leaves and umbels of insignificant small greenish white flowers in early summer. In the wild, they form large hummocks, to 24″ or more tall by 4′ feet across, but seldom attain the size in cultivation. Grow as foliage plants in an alpine house in scree bed or in a tufa. Grow in any very sharply drained, humus rich soil in full sun, they prefer cool moist climates Prone to spider mites, and aphids. B. gummifera – Azorella glebaria – B. glebaria – This slow growing, compact perennial from Southern Chile, Southern Argentina and the Falkland Islands grows 2-6″ tall and 6-15″ wide. It produces rosettes of very deeply 3 lobed, 1/4″ long, leathery, dark blue green leaves. In summer it bears umbels of 3-20 tiny, greenish white flowers are borne in summer, are rarely borne.
