Description

Orontium – Golden Club – There is a sole species of a marginal aquatic perennial in this genus. They occur in the Eastern USA. It has large, thick rhizomes producing spatula shaped, submerged, floating , or aerial leaves, and curios, pencil like spadices that stand well above the water. Ideal for the margins of informal pool, it associates well with waterside irises., and primroses in early summer. Grow in deep mud at a pool margins or slow moving stream with ample room to spread, or in containers of loamy soil, in water no deeper than 18″, in full sun to develop the glaucous leaves. Remove the short lived flower spikes when they fade. O. aquaticum – This rhizomatous, marginal aquatic perennial from Eastern USA grows 12-18″ tall and 24-30″ wide. It produces leathery, spatula shaped leaves, submerged, aerial, or floating leaves, to 12″ long, dark green and glaucous, often purple-tinted beneath, bears short lived, small, bright yellow flowers near the tops of numerous cylindrical white spadices, 7″ tall.
