Description

Odontocidium – This hybrid genus of epiphytic, evergreen orchids derived from crosses between Odontoglossum and Oncidium, they are vegetatively indistinguishable from Odontoglossum. They have egg shaped pseudobulbs each produce 2 narrow, strap shaped, mid green leaves, 9″ long. Tall arching racemes or panicles of 12 or more flowers, 3″ across, arise from the base, usually in spring but can be several times a year. The predominantly yellow, yellow-brown, or russet red flowers have lare, flared lips. Cool growing orchids (see chart below). Grow in small pots of epiphytic orchind potting mix, preferably made with fine grade bark to suit the fine root system. In summer, provide bright filtered light and high humidity, water and mist freely, and apply fertilizer at every third watering. In winter, provide full light and water sparingly. Prone to spider mites, aphids, whiteflies, mealy bugs, Colletotrichum leaf spot, and cymbidium mosaic virus.
