Description

Billbergia – Vase Plant – There are about 60 species rosette forming, rhizomatous or suckering, evergreen, mainly epiphytic or rock dwelling perennials (bromeliads), in this genus. They occur from scrub, woodland, and forest up to an altitude of 5,500′ feet high in South Mexico, Central America, and North Eastern and Central South America. They are grown for their erect or arching panicles or racemes of tubular, colorful but short lived flowers. Many also have strap like attractive toothed edged leaves, tightly overlapping. Under glass, grow in epiphytically or in containers of epiphytic bromeliad potting mix in bright indirect light. Keep the central funnel filled with fresh water. In the growing season, water freely and apply a low nitrogen liquid fertilizer monthly, at other times, spray plants once a week. Divide after flowering. Prone to scale insects, mealybugs, and fungal leaf spots.
